Melbourne Workers Theatre's latest show is a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the eight-hour day. During her research, writer-director Donna Jackson visited the building site of the Southern Cross Station, in Spencer Street. "The building union is about a set of ideals," she says. "Even when they've got their backs to the wall, their motto is to 'Hang fat and stay strong' - have a laugh while you're doing it."

The show is set in the old Spotswood pump works, and incorporates huge machinery including front-end loaders and demolition cranes. "It's a great space - very sexy," Jackson says.

Through storytelling, theatrics and live music using industrial percussion and original tunes composed by band leader Mark Seymour, Jackson has one aim: "Whether you have a fetish for Tonka toys, never go to theatre or just aren't happy about Howard's industrial relations policy, we want people to come away from the experience excited."
