WHAT Dave Graney, Point Blank
WHERE The Butterfly Club, 204 Bank Street, South MelbourneWHEN Today and tomorrow at 9pmTICKETS $20 phone 9690 2000Dave Graney up close and personal in the intimate environs of The Butterfly Club? Now for some, that is one scary thought. Having mastered that classic rock'n'roll swagger of disdain towards his audience, it will be interesting to see him meet the challenges of such a confronting room. There has always been a darkly comic and sly cabaret element to Graney's music. As the man says, people have often labelled him as "cabaret" - the charge being levelled as an insult. Presenting a cycle of songs based on the theme of living a professional musical life, he describes the tunes as a collection of "truth and the best lies - songs from a lifer in rock'n'roll's sideshow alley". He is accompanied by Mark Fitzgibbon on piano and Clare Moore on percussion and vocals. Graney says: "It's all down to the lyrics and the drama - and they're the poles I like to swing on." -- LILY BRAGGE
