OVER the next three weeks Preston's Old Fire Station Cafe Gallery will be a cabaret venue as part of Darebin Music Feast 2005.

Although not strictly cabaret performers, local stalwarts, Kerri Simpson, Sally Dastey and Jenny Taylor should be an absolute acoustic treat tomorrow.

With a similar career trajectory to blues man Chris Wilson, Kerri Simpson has been modestly going about her business of writing, recording and playing live for more than 20 years.

Initiated into voodoo practice, Simpson's spirituality informs her everyday life and music. Her best stuff is when she floors people's expectations by singing gospel, Haitian and creole sounds and rhythm'n'blues all rolled into the one event.

Since having a baby at 39, Simpson has continued to play gigs but took a break from song writing for nearly five years. Now that her daughter is almost at school age she has returned to composing once again.

The women will each play separate sets then Dastey who is very Anglo-Celtic in style and Simpson will come together for a few duets at the end. Although markedly different, their voices blend well and unusually. Simpson says the two of them really hooked up when they discovered a mutual passion for old Scottish folk tunes. -- LILY BRAGGE
